자유와 평등 개념에 입각한 근대 민주주의 사상의 고전 <사회계약론>을 소개하는 책. 루소는 이 책을 통해 중세로부터 현대에 이르는 정통적 이론을 망라해서 법치와 민주, 그리고 인본주의적 입장을 제시하고 있다. 이러한 그의 사상은 프랑스 혁명과 근대적 정치 사회체제의 성립에 큰 영향을 주었다. 제1부에서는 계약의 본질에 관한 일반적 고찰을, 제2부에서는 주권과 법의 문제에 대한 고찰을, 제3부에서는 정부 및 정부의 여러 형태에 대한 고찰을, 제4부에서는 특수한 정치체에 대한 고찰을 시도하였다.
